An ideal weekend trip to the Žumberak Nature Park and the Samobor Mountains
The Žumberak and Samoborsko gorje Nature Park, located near Zagreb, is the perfect destination for a weekend trip into nature. This sparsely populated area, known for its traditional villages, pastures and forests, attracts nature lovers and hikers. Visitors can enjoy hiking, exploring archaeological sites, and discovering protected plant species and hidden waterfalls.
The highest peak of the Samobor Mountains, Japetić, offers a spectacular view, and next to it are the ruins of the medieval Okić fortress. Nearby is the Ethno House under Okićem, where you can taste traditional dishes. Among the beauties of Žumberak, the Slapnica Valley stands out, protected for its waterfalls and rich flora and fauna. Here you can see rare species of birds, such as the waterbuck.
For adrenaline lovers, Žumberak offers exploring waterfalls such as Vranjački slap, Zidanje pećine and Draganov mlin. If you are a history buff, don't miss visiting Budinjak, an archaeological site with a rich past, and enjoying local food. There is also a trout farm in the area, where you can try freshly caught fish, and accommodation is offered by many farmhouses and bistros with traditional dishes.

Žumberak and the Samobor Mountains sound like the perfect choice for a weekend getaway! I admire how this area manages to preserve its natural beauty and cultural heritage, while at the same time offering plenty of activities for nature lovers. Waterfalls, hiking, archaeological research, and even fishing – all of this makes this area ideal for a weekend getaway.
