The best trout from the heart of Žumberak
In the heart of Žumberak, just 800 meters from the springs that feed numerous streams, are the Vrabac fish farms, where California, brown and salmon trout are bred, among the best in Croatia. The owner of the fish farm, Tomo Vrabac, left a secure job as an electrical engineer in Zagreb and decided to return to his grandfather's hometown to devote himself to trout farming. With the help of experts and the experience gained through years of work at HEP, Tomo built a sophisticated system of watercourses and pools for trout farming.
His trout swim in crystal clear water and are known for their high quality. Tomo takes care of every detail of the farming process – from spawning to the final product, ensuring a high standard of living for the trout. In addition to selling, they produce their own California and brown trout spawn. Every year they produce around 30-40 tons of trout for consumption. In addition to selling trout to Zagreb markets, they also offer their visitors lakes for fishing, a meadow for games, and areas for relaxation and barbecue.

The quality of the water and the technology used clearly bring excellent results. I must admit that I did not know about this production, but now I will definitely look for trout from Žumberak at the market. It is nice to see someone bringing back tradition and bringing so much innovation to such an important industry. I am glad that the family also has future heirs like Katarina, who is engaged in freshwater fishing. I will definitely visit the Vrabac fishponds next time I am in Žumberak!
