Beavers in Žumberak – challenges for the local community
Residents of Žumberak are increasingly facing problems caused by beavers. Their dams change the flow of streams and rivers, causing floods that hinder traffic and damage private yards and agricultural areas.
What's going on?
Beavers build dams to create stable aquatic habitats, but this can have unintended consequences:
- Flooding on the roads – water remains on roads, making it difficult for vehicles and pedestrians to move.
- Damage to yards and agricultural areas – elevated water levels can damage lawns, gardens and crops.
- Tree felling – beavers use trees to build dams, changing the appearance and function of the landscape.
- Settlement on neglected estates – these areas often provide them with peace and access to food, which is why they settle in abandoned parts of the village.
How do beavers affect the local community?
In Žumberek, the owner of the pond, Tomo Vrabac, has been fighting beavers for years, who have built dams on the Kupčina stream, reducing the flow of water to the fish farm. This caused the loss of 400 kilograms of fish due to lack of oxygen. Although he tried to remove the dams, the beavers built them again, endangering his business and fish stocks.
How can the problem be solved?
Since beavers are a protected species, solutions need to be sustainable and in harmony with the natural ecosystem. Some ways to reduce their impact include:
- Regular environmental cleaning in order to prevent the accumulation of material suitable for the construction of dams.
- Active work on the farm which reduces the attractiveness of certain areas for beavers to settle.
- Partial removal of dams to ensure natural water flow.
- Installation of protective fences in areas where beavers cause damage.
Beavers are a part of nature and their presence can bring benefits to the ecosystem, but it is important to find a balance between preserving their habitat and protecting residents' property.
